Magnesium chloride is mainly used to make metal magnesium, as a disinfectant, fire extinguishing agent, ice salt refrigerant, and also used in ceramics, textiles, papermaking and other industries. Magnesium chloride solution is mixed with magnesium oxide in a certain proportion, commonly known as magnesia cement, which is hard and wear-resistant. If wood chips and shavings are added as fillers, it can be made into artificial marble, particle board, etc. Mixing magnesium chloride with magnesia can be used as steelmaking furnace lining. Both sea water and bittern contain magnesium chloride. It can be prepared by reacting with magnesia or magnesite and hydrochloric acid.
